Transgressive pop music, or avant-garde folk? We're amiss what to call it (in the event someone calls us out on radio again), but we had the same problems with a similar band on the label.

Recorded by Rohan Evans (owner of The Wine Cellar, curator of great NZ music), "Horror In Clay" is a subversive debut from Auckland four-piece Horror in Clay, set for release June 21st through MUZAI Records worldwide.

Horror in Clay was born from the Cheyne-stokes noises made by iconic NZ group Girls Pissing on Girls Pissing. With members moving to Canada and the United Kingdom, it gave songwriter Casey Latimer a chance to revisit the more gruelling aspects of his music.

Lead single "Heck Cattle Grazing" gave audiences a glimpse into what to expect from the debut album; a discordant, abrasive sound that is uncannily reserved in its approach. It yields once again the ominous nature of the collective's previous musical endeavours.

The band's second single, "The Death of Brian" is a further proponent of the darkened folk-art elements. It's a particular form of vitriol that isn't bitterness so to speak - it's rather a reserved, muted disdain instead.

It's the "uncompromising spirit", to paraphrase Undertheradar.co.nz, that we've come to expect from the musicians involved.
